It houses not only the Royal residence and throne room, but also a large number of Government Offices and the Emerald Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Kaeo).

Ayutthaya was later to take over this function, but in 1569 the Burmese Kingdom, an age-old enemy, inflicted a bitter defeat on Siam by ravaging Ayutthaya and massacring the population.

In the following decades the Siamese took Ayutthaya back but in 1767 the Burmese sacked it again.

After having once again driven the invaders out of Siam, King Taksin moved the capital to Thonburi in 1770.

About ten years later the next king, Rama I, founder of the Chakri dynasty (which still reigns today), chose to settle on the other side of the Chao Praya River in the village called Bangkok.

In 1782 he built a palace on a meander of the river (which would be the official residence of the Kings of Siam until 1946) and a temple named Wat Phra Keo to house the statuette of the Emerald Buddha.

In the course of time, many other royal buildings were added and it is this group of buildings, each one more sumptuous than the other, scattered in a huge enclosure of 218 hectares that we call the Grand Palace.

It was then decided to build a luxury hotel that would meet their expectations, and in just 18 months the Hotel Palace Merano was built and opened in 1906. The style and architecture of the Palace, evoking the Neo-classicism of the luxury hotels of the French Riviera, inspired the great figures of the time to take advantage of the Mediterranean climate, the pure and dry air of Meranoa and the sumptuous services available.

The lobby was embellished with marble and crystals, while the furnishings of the rooms still today offer a perfect marriage between ancient and modern, precious fabrics and contemporary details.

The advent of the Second World War, which transformed the luxurious hotel into a garrison for German troops, heralded the end of the Palace, but the merchants and landowners of Merano, who could not resign themselves to seeing the flagship of their tourist supply fall into the hands of real estate speculators, founded a company with 8 shareholders to take over the business.

Then, to meet the growing demand from wealthy tourists and clients interested in spa treatments, major modernization works were undertaken from 1972: raising the panoramic floor, enlarging the kitchens, creating spa services in the basement, building an outdoor swimming pool, creating ssnew rooms and suites.

However, it was only with the arrival of Henri Chenot in the 1990s that a total renovation of the spa and a major change in the planned use of the centre was achieved: the addition in the year 2000 of the new pavilion housing the Wellness Centre enabled the Palace Merano Espace Henri Chenot to become one of the most efficient, innovative and renowned spa and wellness centres in Europe today.

At the end of 2005, the property passed into the hands of Pietro Tosolini, a very important personality for the Palace Merano, who is the sole owner, and to whom we owe the large investments for the renovation of the rooms and suites, the common areas such as the swimming pools and the fitness area as well as the internal Spa: interventions that make the Palace Merano Espace Henri Chenot an ever more advanced establishment preserving all the splendour of earlier times.
